A Look at the High Cost of Being a Conscientious Consumer"Greetings, friends! It's your ol' pal Mark Twain here, and I've got something on my mind that I just can't shake: the cost of ethical fashion. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Mark, you're a dead white guy from the 19th century, what do you know about ethical fashion?" Well, I may not know much about the latest fashion trends, but I do know a thing or two about being a responsible consumer. And let me tell you, my dear friends, being a responsible consumer ain't cheap

The High Cost of Being a Conscientious Consumer

Greetings, friends! It's your ol' pal Mr Hideous here, and I've got something on my mind that I just can't shake: the cost of ethical fashion. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Mr Hideous, you’re a pioneer of the UK ethical fashion, run one of the world’s most ethical brands and keep prices as low as possible, what more can you do?!” Well, that may be true, but I also realise that being a responsible consumer ain't cheap.

You see, ethical fashion is all about making sure that the clothes we wear were made in a way that's fair to the people who made them and the planet we live on. Sounds great, right? Who wouldn't want to make sure that the clothes they wear were made in a way that's fair to the people who made them and the planet we live on? In Hideous’ case, that includes using organic materials, renewable energy, paying fairtrade wages to everyone involved in the supply chain, having items made to order with zero waste and a circular economy. The problem is, this kind of clothing often comes with a much higher price tag. Our organic cotton t-shirts are generally around £20.

Now, I know that some of you are thinking, "Mr Hideous, I don't care about the cost, I just want to do the right thing." And I say to you, my dear friends, I admire your convictions. But let's be real here, most of us ain't made of money. We've got bills to pay, mouths to feed, and the occasional hankering for a refreshing gin and tonic on a hot summer day. And when it comes down to it, most of us are going to choose the cheaper option.

Ideas For Ethical Consumers

So, what's a conscientious consumer to do? Well, I've got a few ideas.

Do your research: Before making a purchase, research the brand and their ethical practices. Look for ethically accredited brands who practice Fair Trade. There are plenty of brands out there that are making an effort to be more ethical and sustainable, but not all of them are created equal. Do a little digging and find out which brands align with your values.

Invest in quality: Invest in high-quality, well-made pieces that will last longer, rather than fast fashion items that will fall apart quickly.

Shop secondhand: Don't be afraid to shop secondhand. Buying secondhand clothing is a great way to reduce waste and support sustainable fashion. Just because something is used doesn't mean it's not ethical. In fact, buying secondhand clothes is one of the most sustainable things you can do. Not only are you keeping clothes out of landfills, but you're also giving them a second life. Look for vintage and thrift stores, or online marketplaces such as Depop.

Support local: Supporting local designers and small businesses is a great way to ensure that your money is going towards ethical and sustainable practices.

Be mindful of materials: Look for natural materials such as organic cotton, linen, and hemp, and avoid synthetic materials like polyester and nylon, which can take hundreds of years to decompose.

Be patient: Ethical fashion can be more expensive and harder to find, but it is worth the extra effort and investment to ensure that your clothes are made in a sustainable and ethical way.

Finally, remember that ethical fashion is a journey, not a destination. None of us are perfect, and we're all gonna make mistakes along the way. But if we're all doing our best to make more conscious choices, we're gonna make the world a better place.

So, my dear friends, is ethical fashion affordable?

The short answer in the current climate is no.

But is it worth it? Absolutely.

Yours truly,

Mr Hideous

This is the story of how and why the Hideous brand was born.
