After a worldwide search, he decided that Rapanui were a perfect fit. Rapanui are a company based in the UK who were able to offer Mr Hideous an almost perfect process which contained everything he was looking for. This is the first in a series of posts regarding the Hideous process.

Organic Cotton

Mr Hideous has always been a huge advocate of organic cotton, both in clothing and bedding. Why organic cotton? It is better for the producers and ecosystem where it is produced as there are no artificial fertilisers or pesticides used in the growth of the cotton. Toxic pesticides have previously been responsible for causing sometimes irreversible damage to wildlife and rivers, as well as many communities and farmers.

By avoiding potentially toxic pesticides, the cotton farmers and workers benefit by avoiding the possible health problems and deaths which are common in non-organic cotton production. The non-use of pesticides reduces production costs and farmer debts. The problems with pesticide debt has resulted in thousands of suicides in India which is the world’s largest cotton producer.

GM Free

GM (genetically modified) cotton makes up a significant amount of worldwide cotton production. This is a process where crops are modified using a genetic engineering technique usually in order to introduce a characteristic to the plant that doesn’t naturally occur, such as a resistance to pesticides. Organic cotton is GM free, as it is banned in organic systems. GM cotton can pose a risk to wildlife and human health, as well as causing farmers unnecessary expense.

Even though there are less inputs into the growth of organic cotton, it means less water is required, however, the cotton is still a thirsty crop. The fields that grow the organic cotton for our products are in the North of India, where the monsoons fill reservoirs that supply almost all the water needed.

GOTS Certified

One of the reasons that Mr Hideous left the “fast fashion” industry was because of the poor working conditions and abuses of workers rights that are commonplace in the industry. That is why all of the organic cotton used in Hideous designs is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. GOTS certified organic textiles must meet social criteria based on the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions. These cover minimum wages, working hours, child labour, freedom of association, discrimination, harsh or inhumane treatment and more. GOTS is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. The GOTS official website is https://www.global-standard.org/

Therefore, when you wear a Hideous product, you can be sure that every base has been covered with regard to ethical production.

This is the story of how and why the Hideous brand was born.
